Kernel Hearts Demo Walkthrough
A practical route through the playable Heavens before the full Tower opens.
The Kernel Hearts demo is not a vertical slice of the entire Tower. Director Akira’s August 2026 post is blunt: the demo has 2 floors, while the full game has around 7. Treat this walkthrough as a route through what you can actually play on Steam and Epic, not as a spoiler script for September 17.
If you have not booted the game yet, read Getting Started first. This page assumes you know Fernet exists, death restores a backup, and the difficulty bar on the right is not a decoration. Floor names: Tower and Heavens. Guardian: bosses. Unlock gates: how to unlock units.
Demo goals (in order)
- Finish the training / boot sequence without skipping every prompt.
- Walk Babel and talk to the Creator and at least one scavenger.
- Clear Folktale Fields and beat the B-Cho Ringleader (or extract if you are learning).
- Spend the shop. Do not bank unused currency out of fear.
- Unlock Spika if the demo build still gates her behind progress.
- Attempt Ash Desert once so you feel the jump in space and enemy density.
- Stop. The demo is a teacher, not a leaderboard.
Training area and Babel
Long demo captures (including the session embedded above) spend the first minutes in a training space: movement, camera, light and heavy, a first spell. This is where you confirm controls. If dodge feels late, fix it here, not in a caster pack.
Babel comes next. It is a city of masks and ash, not a combat zone. The Creator is your mechanic. Scavengers explain the world’s leftover tech. You can rush the Tower door; you will miss the tone the game is selling. Bonding systems do not finish in a demo, but NPC flags now save you from treating the hub as a skip button in the full climb.
First Heaven: Folktale Fields
Epic’s hands-on describes Folktale Fields as a compressed Hyrule Field: broken buildings, petrified angels that wake if you hit them, secrets on the edges, and packs you can choose to take or kite. It is the first step up Babel, not an indoor corridor.
Enemy types you will actually see:
- B-Cho Casters — ground mages. Interrupt or close fast; leaving two alive while you greed a relic is how wipes start.
- Pixips — floaters. Fernet’s Raiquen exists for these. Melee-only players eat chip damage.
- Petrified angels — scenery until you smack them. They are a difficulty tax for greedy explorers.
The percentage bar on the right climbs with time. Early packs feel easy. That is bait. A clean first clear is: pick a lane, fight two or three clusters, grab visible relics, and rotate toward the guardian. A greedy clear is: circle the whole meadow until the bar is ugly, then fight the boss tired. Both are valid; only the second teaches the curse. Read transformation before you farm the bar on purpose.
Boss: B-Cho Ringleader
Demo sessions call the Folktale Fields guardian B-Cho Ringleader. Expect a larger caster with adds and a wider arena than the field packs. Practical plan on Fernet:
- Enter with Koka already stacked if the demo still allows recast stacking.
- Dodge the obvious slam or beam; do not greed heavy attacks through telegraphs.
- Use Raiquen when the boss floats or after a knockback.
- If you brought co-op partners, assign one player to adds. Four people hitting the boss while casters free-cast is a wipe, not a strategy. See co-op.
You can lose here. That is the point. Backup, shop, retry.
Results screen and shop
After a run you get a results tally and a shop. August 2026 notes say combat and economy were rebalanced so mementos and relics scale with player level. Demo economy still feels short because runs are short. Buy:
- Anything that keeps you alive in the next Fields attempt (HP, dodge, block).
- Mana or spell power if you are staying on Fernet.
- One experimental chip so you learn the 256KB puzzle. Details in chips and builds.
Do not save everything for a full-game myth. The demo’s job is to teach spending.
Third Heaven in captures: Ash Desert
Some public playthroughs reach a later demo slice labeled Ash Desert (Third Heaven). It is a wider, harsher field with worse sightlines and less “I’m overpowered” energy. If your build only works on Fields grass, it will show here. Treat the first Ash Desert attempt as a scout: note enemy silhouettes, do not insist on a full clear, and leave with information.
The full game’s remaining Heavens are not fully listed in store copy. Wiki community pages mention seven domains of heaven and Daiki as the lobby contact between them. Do not invent floor names past what your client shows.
Unlock Spika, then stop theorycrafting
If the demo still hides Spika, put the work in. Katana, Sangetsu (slash projectile), Higanbana (AoE with i-frames). Players who bounce off Fernet’s “stiffer” melee often stay after Spika. Then peek Laika if she is selectable. Dolce has the thinnest public kit writeups; do not expect a complete guide from trailer footage alone.
When the demo has taught you the bar, the shop, and one boss, you are done. Queue combat and tier list next, not a third identical Fields farm unless you are testing a chip.
What the demo will not teach
- Late Heaven bosses and the god.
- Full bond routes with Babel’s cast.
- How 256KB feels after a seven-floor economy.
- Day-one balance. The August patch already moved mementos and relics; launch will move them again.
For dates and the Fortnite outfit, use release date. For patch history, use demo notes.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers before you climb the Tower of Babel.
How long is the Kernel Hearts demo?
A careful first run with Babel talk can fill an hour. Combat-only players finish Folktale Fields faster. The studio says the demo is two floors versus about seven in the full game.
Can I unlock every character in the demo?
Fernet is the default. Spika is commonly unlockable with playtime. Laika and Dolce availability depends on the build you downloaded — check the in-game select screen rather than older videos.
Should I linger for loot in Folktale Fields?
A little, not forever. The difficulty bar and Heavenly Curse scale with time. Grab visible relics, then rotate to the B-Cho Ringleader unless you are practicing transformation.
Does demo progress carry into the full game?
Do not assume it does. Play the demo to learn systems. Treat chips, bonds, and unlocks as practice until the studio says otherwise in launch notes on Updates.
