How to Play Kernel Hearts Co-op

Solo is fine. Four MAHOU units is the fantasy — if you respect the curse clock.

Co-op Guide

Kernel Hearts is built as a squad fantasy. Whitethorn’s copy is the clean version: play alone or with up to three friends. Store pages sometimes say “up to four friends,” which reads as marketing overflow; the consistent design is a four-player M.A.H.O.U. Unit. Online co-op is the mode. This is not advertised as local split-screen.

If you have not learned the solo loop, do that first in Getting Started. Co-op multiplies every bad habit.

How to actually squad up

  1. Same platform store. Steam with Steam, Epic with Epic, console with console unless a later patch prints cross-play. Do not promise cross-play until the client says it.
  2. One player hosts. Others join from the in-game invite / friend flow. Discord is the social layer the studio points at; link it from Official Links.
  3. Agree on character picks before the door. Four Fernets is a meme. A real stack is Fernet (pets, flex), Spika (melee), Laika (heavy), Dolce (fourth kit). See players and the tier list.
  4. Confirm controls so nobody is fighting the camera in the first B-Cho pack.
  5. Host states the plan: fast Fields or greedy Fields. Mixing those silently is how the bar explodes.

Steam’s spec sheet warns that performance may vary during online co-op. If someone is on minimum GPU, cap expectations, not friendships.

Combat jobs in a four-stack

Read the combat guide for verbs. In co-op, assign jobs:

  • Anchor — Fernet with Koka, or Laika. Holds a pack so others can delete flyers.
  • Carry — Spika inside the blob. She wants space, not three people stuffing the same hitbox.
  • Float — whoever has the best projectile (Raiquen, Sangetsu, Blades) deletes Pixips and woken angels.
  • Clock — one human watches the difficulty bar and transformation windows. If everyone watches DPS meters, nobody watches the curse.

Adds on the B-Cho Ringleader are a job, not a side effect. If all four players stand in the boss and ignore casters, you will learn that the hard way.

Pings, emotes, and callouts

Public feature lists include pings and emotes. Use ping for: relic on the edge, petrified angel you do not want smacked, “rotate to boss,” “I am transforming,” “I am down.” Voice is better. Silence is how four people each linger “one more pack.”

Revives and deaths

Death still trips a backup, but in co-op a downed partner is a current-fight problem. Practical rules from any action co-op, applied here:

  • Do not revive in a beam. Kill the extra caster first.
  • Transform after a revive if the bar is ugly, not during the pickup animation unless the kit gives i-frames (Spika’s Higanbana is the example).
  • If two people are down, the living pair plays defense. Heroing a triple revive into a high bar is a full wipe.
  • After a wipe, shop together. One player greed-rolling chips while others buy HP is how run two desyncs. See chips and builds.

Social hub is still part of co-op

Babel is shared narrative space. Speedrunners will skip NPCs. A four-stack doing the full bonding pitch will not finish it in the demo, and that is fine. Do not hold a pug in the bar for ten minutes unless they asked. Save gift routes for a premade that wants the story tone.

What not to do on launch night

  • Do not assume progress shares perfectly across stores.
  • Do not invite three randoms into Ash Desert as their first Heaven.
  • Do not all transform on the first trash pack.
  • Do not argue tier list mid-fight. Fernet is allowed to exist even if Spika highlights better.

Co-op is the reason this game is not just another solo roguelike with a cute coat. Play it like a unit. The Tower is already trying to delete you on a timer.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers before you climb the Tower of Babel.

How many players can play Kernel Hearts together?

Up to four: you and three allies in online co-op. Solo is fully supported. Local split-screen is not the advertised mode.

Is there cross-play?

Do not count on it until the in-game menu or launch notes say so. Stack on one storefront. Watch Updates after September 17.

Should we all pick different characters?

Yes if you can. Fernet + Spika + Laika covers pets, melee, and heavy. Four of the same kit stacks weaknesses. See the tier list.

Does co-op make the demo easier?

Early packs yes, late bar no. More players means more greed. Assign add duty and a curse clock or Folktale Fields still wipes you.
