Demo Notes

The Kernel Hearts demo is the real tutorial. It is free on Steam and the Epic Games Store. It is not the September 17 game with a padlock on the last floors. Director Akira’s August 17, 2026 post is the sentence you should memorize: the demo has 2 floors, the full game has around 7.

For a route, use the demo walkthrough. This page is the patch and scope sheet.

Where to get it

  • Steam: Kernel Hearts app 2902170, demo download on the store page.
  • Epic: Kernel Hearts product page, demo listed beside pre-purchase.
  • Console demos: do not assume they exist because PC does. If a PS5 or Xbox demo appears, it will be news for Updates. Until then, PC is the playable pitch.

You need a 64-bit Windows install that meets system requirements. Co-op performance can dip on minimum GPU.

What you can do in the demo

  • Boot sequence, training area, Babel hub, lab backup.
  • Play Fernet immediately.
  • Unlock Spika with playtime on typical builds.
  • Climb Folktale Fields, fight B-Cho Ringleader, shop, sometimes reach Ash Desert in longer sessions.
  • Online co-op with up to three allies if your version still hosts it. Co-op.
  • Install chips up to the 256KB idea, at demo economy scale. Chips and builds.

August 2026 demo update (the one that matters)

Posted with the September 17 date:

  1. Japanese VO. Start a New Game to get the new story scenes. Old saves can skip them.
  2. Combat and economy rebalance. Most mementos and relics now scale better with player level and were retuned so choices feel worth pressing.
  3. Scaling can still feel mild because demo runs are short. That is expected.
  4. Enemy counts adjusted: less sponge, still a challenge.
  5. Full-game runs are supposed to get considerably crazier than a demo session.

If your muscle memory is from March–June footage, it is out of date. Relearn combat.

What the demo will not prove

  • Bond routes with every Babel NPC.
  • Late Heaven bosses and the god.
  • Final chip prices and a stable 256KB meta.
  • Whether Dolce or Laika are selectable on every build.
  • Day-one console performance.
  • Review scores.

Play it to learn the backup loop, the curse clock, and whether you want four friends in a meadow. Then stop grinding it like a live-service.

A useful demo session is one Folktale Fields clear, one shop, one failed Ash Desert scout, and a note on whether Spika unlocked. That is enough to make September 17 feel like a continuation instead of a tutorial. Anything past that is optional homework, not a hidden ranking.

Progress into the full game

Do not assume demo chips, unlocks, or wallets transfer. Unless launch notes say they do, treat demo progress as practice. The release date page is where transfer news would go.

Getting Started for the first hour. Transformation for the curse. Official Links for store buttons. Tier list if you unlocked Spika and want an argument.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers before you climb the Tower of Babel.

Is the Kernel Hearts demo free?

Yes, on Steam and the Epic Games Store. It is a shorter climb, not the paid launch build.

How many floors are in the demo?

Two, per the director. The full Tower is about seven Heavens.

Why don’t I hear Japanese voices?

The August update added Japanese VO. Start a New Game. Continuing an old save can skip the new scenes.

Should I wait for Next Fest builds?

June 2026 already advertised a Next Fest refresh. Play the current client. If a newer demo drops, this page should note it under Updates.
