Kernel Hearts Getting Started Guide

From boot sequence to your first domain guardian without wasting a run.

Getting Started

Kernel Hearts looks like a trailer for four different games at once: anime magical girls, a biblical tower, a hack-and-slash, and a roguelike with a computer joke in the title. It is all of those, but the first hour is simpler than the marketing. You wake a M.A.H.O.U. unit, you walk Babel, you enter a Heaven, you die or extract, and you spend chips. Repeat until the ash stops — or until the demo ends.

This page is the onboarding path. Pair it with controls if you are on mouse and keyboard, and with the demo walkthrough once you actually step into Folktale Fields. Map names: Tower and Heavens. Unlock gates: how to unlock units.

What you are playing

Ephemera Games (Argentina) and publisher Whitethorn Games built a multiplayer co-op roguelike action RPG. You belong to the M.A.H.O.U. Unit, an elite force of super-powered android magical girls. The last city sits at the foot of the Tower of Babel. Angels hold the floors. God sits at the top. Humanity is drowning in falling ash. Your brief is to climb, kill, and unseat that god.

You can play solo or with up to three allies (four players). Online co-op is the advertised mode. The full game launches September 17, 2026 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch 2, Steam, and the Epic Games Store. Until then the demo is the real tutorial.

Before you boot

  1. Check system requirements. Minimum is a GTX 1060-class GPU, 8 GB RAM, and 15 GB disk, aimed at 1080p Low/Medium. Co-op can dip.
  2. Decide Steam vs Epic. Epic pre-purchase is the only path to the Fernet Fortnite outfit during the pre-order window. Gameplay is the same climb. See pre-order and release date.
  3. Use a gamepad if you have one. Steam lists DualShock and DualSense support and marks a pad as recommended. Keyboard works; the demo’s training area is where you confirm binds.
  4. Start a New Game on current demo builds if you want the Japanese voice-over added in the August 17 update. Old saves can skip the new scenes.

The loop in one paragraph

You leave the lab, cross Babel, and enter a Heaven. Inside, a difficulty percentage climbs the longer you stay. Enemies pack denser, relics and mementos drop, and the Heavenly Curse builds toward a magical girl transformation. The floor ends in a domain guardian. Win or die, your unit restores from the last memory backup. Run-only power goes away. MAHOU.OS chips stay. That is the whole genre pitch.

First character: play Fernet

The demo and the story both start with Fernet, captain of the unit, Argentinian, saber, telekinesis. Epic’s hands-on calls her a Spiritmancer: light and heavy strings, dodge, block, and two signature spells — Koka (pet that stacks if recast, close-range AoE) and Raiquen (bird projectile, burst at range). She is the easiest on-ramp. Wiki-style notes call her melee kit softer than Spika’s, with more kiting tools.

Unlock Spika as soon as the demo allows. Demo comments and the character page agree: her katana and aerials are the “this is actually a fighter” moment. Laika (greatsword Damocles, hemokinesis) and Dolce complete the four. Do not reroll your Steam account looking for a fifth starter — the squad is these four.

Compare them later on the tier list. For hour one, Fernet is correct.

Babel, the lab, and NPCs

After the boot sequence you are in Babel, a cosmopolitan holdout on the outskirts of the Tower. This is the social hub, not a loot pinata. The Creator maintains MAHOU units in the laboratory; he is the mechanic behind your backups. Scavengers (Rhea and the dog Haru) recover what the world forgot. Masks keep ash out of lungs. Artificers, a bar, and settlers exist so the roguelike has a town between deaths.

Talk to people. The store feature list includes bonding and gifts. That is not flavor text; it is one of the four pillars next to combat, chips, and transformation. Names and gifts: Babel and bonds. You will not finish those arcs in a two-floor demo, but skipping every NPC trains a bad habit for September 17.

Combat you must have on day one

You do not need a full combo chart yet. You need four verbs:

  • Light / heavy — Fernet’s bread and butter. Mix them; do not mash one button.
  • Dodge — i-frames matter once B-Cho packs thicken.
  • Block — Fernet can hold a line; Spika would rather not.
  • Spells — mana is the reason Fernet wins mid-range. Recast Koka for stacked DPS; save Raiquen for flyers and bosses.

A rising bar on the right is the time-to-danger meter. Early packs feel overtuned in your favor. Wait, and petrified angels wake, casters multiply, and the floor becomes a raid. The combat guide covers that bet. The transformation guide covers spending the curse on purpose.

After the first death

You will die. The trailer line is literal: each death kicks a backup, and a new model wakes. Spend whatever the run paid you. The chips and builds page explains the 256KB cap. Rule of thumb for beginners: buy survivability and mana before exotic damage chips. A longer Folktale Fields clear is worth more than a glass cannon that folds when the difficulty bar hits mid-range.

Then go again. Two demo floors are enough to learn shop routing, the B-Cho Ringleader, and whether you want friends. If you do, read co-op before you invite a full stack — four players in a rising curse is how runs turn into wipes.

Launch-week checklist

  • Wishlist or pre-order on the store you actually play. Fernet’s Fortnite cosmetic is Epic-account gated.
  • Finish the demo once solo, once in co-op if you can find a trio.
  • Main Fernet, unlock Spika, try Laika if she is selectable on your build.
  • Bookmark Updates for day-one patches.
  • Keep this wiki’s guides hub handy; inner links stay locale-clean.

Kernel Hearts is not a live-service with daily codes. It is a $20-class action roguelike with a town, a tower, and a transformation button. Learn the backup loop, and the rest of the wiki is just specialization.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers before you climb the Tower of Babel.

Should I wait for September 17 instead of the demo?

Play the demo. It teaches Folktale Fields, the shop, and Fernet’s kit. The full game adds more Heavens (around seven) and longer scaling, not a different tutorial.

Keyboard or controller?

Both work. Steam marks a gamepad as recommended and lists DualShock / DualSense. Rebind in the controls page’s spirit: keep dodge on a comfortable shoulder.

Which character should I main first?

Fernet. She is the story captain, the demo default, and the most forgiving. Unlock Spika second.

Does death delete my upgrades?

Run loot and floor modifiers reset. Chips installed on MAHOU.OS persist. That is the roguelike split — details in chips and builds.
