Laika — Kernel Hearts Greatsword

Hemokinesis, Damocles, and the unit who would rather slam than kite.

Last updated:

Laika

Laika is the third playable M.A.H.O.U. unit. She is a redhead with white streaks, golden yellow eyes, a military-officer silhouette, and a greatsword named Damocles. Her magic is hemokinesis — blood as projectile and pillar, not as a lore footnote.

Read her next to Fernet (safer saber) and Spika (faster katana). Roster: players hub.

Identity

Community pages give her a USSR-coded past and a temper she keeps inside professional boundaries. Honest, blunt, serious, with a soft spot for Dolce. Demo story for her is incomplete; she reads as the one who knows more than she shares. That is character, not a hidden quest we will invent.

Visual: long bangs, high ponytail, green jacket, black tie, white gloves, black strap, pantyhose, boots. On the store capsule she is the redhead with the oversized blade in the back of the pack. If you cannot see a katana eyepatch girl, you are looking at Laika or Dolce, not Spika.

Kit

Blades — five powerful projectiles, good for opening a group, ranged, burst AoE. This is how a greatsword user is allowed to start a fight without walking through a beam.

Blood Pillar — plant a pillar that multi-hits. Community notes flag it for combos and shielded enemies. If a guardian or elite is holding a shield gate, this is the spell you wanted, not another heavy swing into armor.

Pick Laika if you like committed melee, slam windows, and blood projectiles. Avoid her if you want Fernet’s kiting pets or Spika’s i-frame bloom as your primary identity. She can play at range for a few seconds; she does not want to live there.

Availability in the demo depends on build. If she is locked, finish Spika’s unlock path first. Your select screen beats any article.

How to play her

  1. Open with Blades on a cluster or a caster in the back.
  2. Walk in only after the obvious telegraph. Greatsword recovery is the tax.
  3. Blood Pillar on elites, shielded targets, and boss downed phases — not on a lone Pixip.
  4. Dodge like the recovery is longer than Fernet’s. It is.
  5. Transform when the pillar is already placed so true form is extra hits, not the only hits. Transformation.

Folktale Fields: she is excellent at deleting a chosen pack and slower at rotating. Greedy lingering is more dangerous because her “oops I whiffed” window is bigger. Fast clears fit her. See demo walkthrough.

Co-op: she can anchor a lane. Do not stack three people in her pillar unless the enemy is a boss. Co-op.

Chips

Spend 256KB on making heavies and pillars less suicidal: defense, hyper-armor if it exists as a chip, mana if Blades is your real opener. A glass Laika is a highlight and a backup screen. Chips and builds.

Versus the squad

Highest “I planted a problem and stood in it” energy. Worse chase than Spika. Worse pet uptime than Fernet. The Dolce soft-spot is a story hook; it is not a combo listing. Play Dolce because you like Dolce, not because Laika’s bio mentioned her.

Tier list will probably slot Laika as a high-risk melee until launch numbers exist. That is a warning about recovery frames, not a ban.

Combat for pack rules. Getting Started for the lab. Updates if a patch changes hemokinesis scaling the way August already changed relics.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers before you climb the Tower of Babel.

What weapon does Laika use?

A greatsword named Damocles, plus hemokinesis spells: Blades (five projectiles) and Blood Pillar (multi-hit plant).

Is Laika in the demo?

She is the third unit in the advertised roster. Whether your demo build lets you select her depends on the version. Check character select.

Laika vs Spika?

Spika is faster melee with i-frames on Higanbana. Laika is heavier, with better planted AoE on shields. Try both if unlocked.

Does Laika need co-op?

No, but she enjoys a partner who deletes flyers while she plants a pillar. Fernet is the easy pair.
