Kernel Hearts Combat Guide
Mix attacks, spells, and movement before the Heavenly Curse eats the floor.
Kernel Hearts sells itself as a combo game. Store copy talks about mixing attacks, spells, and movement with unique powers each run. In the demo that sentence is literal: your character kit is the baseline, mementos and relics are the run mods, and the difficulty bar is the clock that punishes standing still.
This page is the in-run layer. Permanent chips belong on chips and builds. Coffins and run loot belong on mementos and relics. Transformation belongs on its own guide. If you still need the town loop, go back to Getting Started.
The four buttons that matter
Exact binds live in controls. Conceptually every unit shares:
- Light attack — fast hits, combo glue, mana weave.
- Heavy attack — commit frames, knockdowns, boss punish.
- Dodge — i-frames. The difference between “anime fighter” and “stiff action game” in player comments.
- Block / guard (stronger on Fernet) — hold a line when dodge stamina is gone.
- Spells — character identity. Mana is not optional flavor.
Spectacle-fighter instincts help. Soulslike panic-rolling does not. Packs in Folktale Fields are designed to be cut through, not solemnly 1v1’d, until the bar climbs and the petrified angels stand up.
Character kits, not just weapons
| Unit | Weapon | Combat job | Spells to learn first |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fernet | Saber | All-rounder, kiting, spirit pets | Koka (stacking close DPS), Raiquen (bird projectile) |
| Spika | Katana | Melee pressure, aerials | Sangetsu (slash projectile), Higanbana (AoE + i-frames) |
| Laika | Greatsword Damocles | Heavy melee, hemokinesis | Blades (five projectiles), Blood Pillar (multi-hit, shields) |
| Dolce | See her page | Fourth squad role; public kit still thinner than the others | Confirm in character select |
Fernet wins beginner runs because Koka is a turret you can recast. Spika wins players who want to stay inside the enemy. Laika wins players who like slam windows and ranged openers. Do not force a “best DPS” until you have cleared the B-Cho Ringleader on two of them.
Difficulty bar and lingering
Epic’s hands-on matches what demo videos show: a percentage on the right rises over time. Early B-Cho casters and Pixips fall over. Later, the same meadow is a raid. Lingering is how you:
- stack relics and mementos
- farm the Heavenly Curse toward transformation
- accidentally wake every petrified angel
A disciplined solo rule: leave when upgrades stop dropping faster than the bar rises. A co-op rule: the host calls the rotate. Four people independently “one more pack” is how Ash Desert starts in Folktale Fields.
August 2026 patch notes say mementos and relics were rebalanced to scale with player level, and enemy counts were tuned so fights feel less spongy. If you watched a March demo video, do not copy its damage expectations.
Packs you will actually fight
B-Cho Casters want you to respect range. Dash in, heavy, dodge out, or eat a beam while you pose. Pixips punish players who never spend mana; Fernet’s Raiquen and Spika’s Sangetsu exist so you are not jumping at balloons with a saber. Petrified angels are optional until you hit them — they are the tax on loot goblins.
Boss rooms (domain guardians) change the rules: fewer places to kite, more telegraphs, adds. The Ringleader is a caster exam — full fight: bosses. Pack names: angels. Assign add duty in co-op. Solo, Koka or Higanbana is your add button, not your ego.
How to beat a floor without a “god build”
- Enter with a plan from your chip page, not from floor-one greed.
- Spend mana. Saving 100% mana for the boss is how you die to Pixips.
- Dodge first, heavy second. Heavies that whiff are the “stiff animation” complaint.
- Watch the bar. Transformation is a spend, not a panic unstuck button — see transformation.
- Extract knowledge even if you die. Backup exists. The shop exists. Ego does not.
Co-op combat
Four MAHOU units in one meadow can trivialize early packs and brick later ones. Stacking every ultimate on the same dummy while casters live is a wipe. Split: one player holds aggro (Laika or Fernet with Koka), one player deletes flyers, one player watches the bar and calls transform. Pings and emotes are listed as real features, not social stickers. Details in the co-op guide.
What we are not guessing
Frame data, exact mana costs, and a full relic tier list are not published as a patch bible. Community wikis leave some spell costs blank. This page stays at jobs, habits, and named demo enemies. When launch notes print numbers, they belong in a table here — not invented the week before September 17.
Practice the verbs in the training area, then run Folktale Fields twice: once greedy, once fast. The better feeling run is your actual combat style. Build chips around that, not around a YouTube thumbnail.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers before you climb the Tower of Babel.
Why do enemies suddenly feel spongy?
You lingered. The difficulty bar and curse scale with time. August 2026 also retuned enemy counts and relic scaling — old videos overstate sponge.
Is Fernet too weak in melee?
Her melee is the safe kit, not the peak kit. She wins with Koka stacks and kiting. If you want a melee main, unlock Spika.
Should I save transformation for the boss?
Often yes, not always. If the bar has already turned the field into a raid, popping true form to stabilize can be correct. Read transformation.
Does co-op scale enemies?
Expect denser fights and more chaos. Steam notes performance may vary in online co-op. Play as if adds still matter; they do.
