Spika — Kernel Hearts Katana

Japanese melee specialist with a projectile slash and an i-frame bloom.

Last updated:

Spika

Spika is the second playable M.A.H.O.U. unit and the character who converts “this looks stiff” demo comments into “this is a fighter.” She hails from Japan, wields a katana, and is built for close-range strings with just enough projectile to not be helpless at range.

Roster index: players hub. Starter contrast: Fernet.

Identity

Public descriptions: one eye covered with a cloth using the Japanese flag, dark purple-short hair, golden yellow eyes, white uniform with black stripes and red knit, metal chest and arm plate, black thigh highs. Community trivia links the name to the anime Twin Spica and notes a lion accessory on the katana. She is described as physically stronger than Fernet, reserved, earnest, bad at small talk. A brother with one eye is mentioned; her reason for joining the unit is not fully told in the demo.

If you came from the trailer’s long-pink-hair magical girl, that is usually Fernet’s true form. Spika’s town model is the eyepatch katana girl. Transformation still applies as a floor rule — transformation.

Kit

Sangetsu — extends a slash into a long-range projectile. Low cost, spammable, mini CC, the tool that stops her from being a pure punch-in. Use it to start, to snipe Pixips, to tag a caster you cannot reach yet.

Higanbana — flurry of slashes, all nearby enemies, big AoE, high hit count, lots of i-frames. This is her panic and her pride. It is also the spell you save for woken-angel clumps and Ringleader add waves.

Pick Spika if you like close fights and long combos. Avoid her if you hate weak range — Sangetsu helps, it does not make her Fernet-with-a-bird.

Demo chatter (and IGN comment culture around the trailers) keeps repeating: unlock Spika before you bounce. Aerial combo potential is the hook. If Fernet’s saber recovery feels heavy, Spika is the patch.

How to unlock her

She is not the default. Play the demo. Older sessions treat her as a progress unlock. Your select screen is law. If she is still locked after a Folktale Fields clear and a shop, do another run rather than assuming a bug. The demo walkthrough lists her as a named goal.

How to play her in a Heaven

  1. Sangetsu on approach so you are not walking into a beam.
  2. Live inside the pack. Her kit rewards being there. If you kite like Fernet, you are wasting a katana.
  3. Higanbana when surrounded or when you need i-frames, not as a cooldown you dump on one caster.
  4. Dodge is still mandatory. I-frames on one spell do not make you immortal.
  5. Co-op: she is the carry, not the add-anchor. Let Fernet’s Koka or Laika’s pillar hold space. Co-op guide.

Boss: Ringleader is a caster exam. Spika wants a clean dive after a telegraph, not a 20-second inside-the-hitbox documentary. If adds spawn, Higanbana, then return to the boss. If you ignore adds because “I’m the melee,” you are the wipe.

Chips

Buy tools that keep her in melee: attack speed, defense after a string, anything that makes Higanbana more available. Do not spend the whole 256KB on projectile power — that is Fernet’s plan. Chips and builds.

Versus the squad

Higher melee ceiling than Fernet, worse pets, worse “I never want to be near the enemy.” Versus Laika she is faster and less committed on heavies. Versus Dolce she is the one with a public combo identity today.

If the tier list has her in S for demo melee, that is a statement about feel, not a promise that launch numbers stay there. Main her because you like the katana.

Combat combos for pack rules. Getting Started if you still need Babel. Laika if you want the other heavy-adjacent fantasy with actual blood magic.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers before you climb the Tower of Babel.

How do I unlock Spika in Kernel Hearts?

Play the demo and check character select after a run. She is the second unit, not the default. Progress gates have existed in public builds.

Is Spika better than Fernet?

For melee players, usually. For a first hour and for pet-based kiting, no. Unlock her; then pick with your hands, not a thumbnail.

What does Higanbana do?

A nearby flurry with high hit count and a lot of i-frames. Save it for clumps and panic, not for a single Pixip.

Does Spika work in co-op?

Yes as the player who stays in the blob. Pair her with Fernet or Laika so someone else holds adds.
